CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It's all in black and white. Cape City Manager John Szerlag wants to hire an Assistant City Manager.  The new position is expected to pay 100,000 dollars or more.  Cape Mayor John Sullivan says the timing is all wrong.

"I don't think we can afford this," said Sullivan.

The Cape hasn't had an Assistant City Manager for nearly two years.  Carl Schwing left Cape City Hall after becoming city manager in Bonita Springs.  Former City Manager Gary King decided not to fill Schwing's position to save money.  We asked Cape Councilman John Carioscia about filling the position.

"I think we need to evaluate what the City Manager tells us," said Carioscia.

In addition to hiring an Assistant, Szerlag wants to reinstate and add a total of 36 new positions.  All of this coming less than a year after the city negotiated pay cuts from nearly every city worker.

Szerlag had no comment when we asked to talk to him about new hires. Not all Council members are opposed to what Szerlag is calling for.

"I think this makes sense for our city," said Erbrick.
