LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Medstar's engines have been ordered silent by County Manager Karen Hawes and now an audit by the Clerk of Courts Charlie Green will find out what happened.

"I don't know what went wrong just yet," said Green.

In mid-August, Hawes grounded Medstar's two helicopters and several pilots and staffers were fired because the program lacked certification.  Hawes later learned Medstar billed for uncertified transports to the tune of three million dollars.

Green's office will go through every aspect of the Medstar program to find out who was responsible for the lack of certifications and over billing.

"It may be multiple mistakes there may be little steps that happened but we will look at details," said Green.

Several Lee County Commissioners have attacked County Manager Karen Hawes who knew of the problems before shutting down the program but did not communicate them with Commissioners.  I asked her about that this week and she admitted that.

Some public officials are calling for Hawe's resignation following the Medstar debacle.  Green says a private service out of Page Field is taking the place of Medstar for now and whatever comes out of his audit he says public safety is his top priority.
