FORT MYERS, Fla. - County Manager Karen Hawes is under fire for grounding the Medstar program.

Hawes tells Lee County Commissioners she knew months before she ordered the Medstar program grounded back on August 19th, that there were problems.

"We have had issues," said Hawes.

Hawes said she was aware of accredication requirements that were not being followed but says she was unsware until over two weeks later the program was over billing patients by over 3 million dollars from February to April.

"As I know, I was not intentional," said Hawes.

Commissioner Frank Mann is frustrated Hawes did not inform his collegues what was going on.

"The commission collectively was not brought in on this months ago when it was uncovered," said Mann.

We are now learning staff members at Medstar knew of these problems but were told to keep quiet.

"Any employee that  brought out the problems; if you identified the problem, you got indentified as the problem,"  said one Medstar employee.

We pushed Hawes for answers, asking her if the problems were discovered months ago, why wasn't something done to keep the Medstar program up in the air.

"I dont understand why you can't answer these questions," asked Fox 4 Reporter John Rupolo.

"I will get you information this afternoon," said Hawes.

We did get a statement saying, " I will be conducting a full internal review of the events and facts involving the Medstar operations and those involved."
