Rescued dolphin released near Sarasota
SARASOTA, Fla. - A dolphin found stranded near Sarasota in June has been released from captivity.
Edna, the bottlenose dolphin was rehabilitated at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, after it was found stranded June 6 on Longboat Key. When Edna arrived at the lab, she was dehydrated and had multiple serious illnesses.
She was estimated to be older than 2-years-old, but younger than 6-years-old. She weighed 165 pounds when she arrived, but had gained nearly one hundred pounds when she was released by boat just before 8 a.m. Tuesday two miles offshore. Scientists will continue to monitor Edna's progress by following the signal of her satellite tag for the next 60 to 100 days.
