PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - The Punta Gorda Police Department is investigating the suspicious death of an infant who was discovered in a freezer.
Police initially responded to a call in the 300 block of Boca Grande Boulevard around 8:30 p.m. Sunday for a medical call involving the mother of the home, Jessica Smallwood, 27.
After being taken to the hospital, Smallwood's conversations with medical staff led them to contact police, who went back to the home and found the infant's body inside a freezer.
Smallwood is not charged in the case. Four other children live in the home with Smallwood.
The Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy on the infant. Punta Gorda Police remained on the scene at the Smallwood home Tuesday morning.
