Granny Scam targeting Charlotte County
DEEP CREEK, Fla. - The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office is warning you to be on the lookout for a new "Granny Scam" targeting local residents.
The latest complained happened Tuesday and involved a Deep Creek woman who says she received a call from a woman claiming to be her granddaughter. The woman said she was in South America and had been arrested. She handed the phone to a person who claimed to be her lawyer, asking the woman to wire money via Western Union from a gas station on Kings Highway. The victim tried to withdraw nearly $3000 from a local bank, but the teller became suspicious by the victim's story. After eventually reaching her real granddaughter in Tampa, the victim realized she had been scammed and contacted the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Bill Cameron again warns residents about this type of scam which is, "Based on emotions that is appearing all over Florida, and especially targeting Charlotte County since the county has the highest average of any county in the nation. If anyone gets such a call, get a phone number to call them back. Immediately call their children or grandchildren and question if the may be in trouble somewhere."
