Winter storm impacting flights in and out of Southwest Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. - A major winter storm rolling into the northeast of the United States is forcing more than a dozen flight cancellations in and out of Southwest Florida International Airport.
Most of the cancellations are in Boston and the New York City area.
Snow began falling overnight in parts of New England and New York, but forecasters say it's likely to get a lot heavier later Thursday. Temperatures are expected to plummet.
Some cities pre-emptively issued on-street parking bans. Homeless shelters are expected to fill beyond capacity.
Boston is looking at up to 14 inches of snow, and Long Island up to 10 inches with strong wind gusts.
According to the aviation tracking website FlightAware.com, about 1,400 flights have been canceled nationwide for Thursday.
