Woman uses baby to hide theft
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Surveillance cameras caught a woman using a baby as a shield to disguise the theft of a cell phone.
Now, Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is asking the public to help identify the woman.
The victim was shopping at Once Upon a Child at 11800 S. Cleveland Avenue around noon last Thursday, February 20th.
After paying for her purchases, she left the store, inadvertently leaving her phone behind. Within seconds, an unknown woman, carrying a young baby, slides over to the cart, and picks up the phone and tucks it behind the baby, then covering it up further with a blanket.
When the phone’s rightful owner returned to the store moments later to retrieve her phone, it was nowhere to be found.
“It’s disturbing that someone would not only steal a stranger’s phone, but then use a baby to conceal their theft,” said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers Coordinator. “Committing a theft is one thing, but using a baby to help get away with it is shameful.”
Anyone with information on the person of interest in this grand theft case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477).
