CAPE CORAL - Students from Oasis Middle School tested out submarines they had built.

The underwater remotely operated vehicles are funded by the Office of Naval Research.

The program, known as Sea-Perch, gives STEM students the opportunity to learn about ocean engineering principals.

"That's the whole idea of STEM is we're training and teaching our kids about the next generation of scientists," said Lori McLain a STEM teacher. "What is it that's out there?  They're going to come up with things we haven't even thought of yet."

"The most fun part is just being able to see your creation actually working and moving in the water," said student Zach Cashman."

The students put their creations to the test Tuesday at the Cape Yacht Club by maneuvering them through and underwater obstacle course.
