FORT MYERS, Fla. – New couponing and price checking apps give shoppers added advantages in saving money this holiday season.

It’s no secret this holiday season stores are giving you even more opportunities to shop, with several of your favorite retailers pushing the start of Black Friday shopping right into Thanksgiving Day.

What may be welcomed news to you is that stores are offering up new ways to save you a buck, and the key has been right in the palm of your hands this whole time.

“I found a different store that was less than five miles away,” said Jason White, Verizon Wireless.

“If it wasn't for this application, I would have been spending $40 more on the exact same product."

So what’s the secret? White used an app called Redlaser, just one of several smartphone apps available this holiday season made with one goal in mind – saving you money.

It makes their life easier,” said White, “It brings products and services to them.”

A person that knows a lot about bringing products and services to the palm of your hand is Sarah Berthold, she works for Edison Mall.

"Deal or steal, coupons, there's a lot of deals out there so it's good to check and see what's best,” said Berthold.

She is in charge of arranging the best in-store deals at Edison Mall and loading them onto the mall’s smartphone app.

“We want to make sure that the shoppers that come here are getting those good deals,” said Berthold, “Whether it's the regular price, a sale in the store, or an additional coupon."

To get in on the savings, just fire up the app store on your iPhone or Google marketplace on your Android device and download the “Simon Malls” app and select “Edison Mall.”

No more coupon cutting, saving money has gone digital.

While in the store, Berthold demonstrated the app and literally within seconds unlocked a 15% off coupon for Macys.

Several big-box stores like Target, Macys, and Best Buy also offer individual store apps packed with coupons you can’t find anywhere else.

“There will be everything from BOGO to ‘show this picture and get XYZ’,” said Berthold, “so there are some great things you can get by just having your phone with you."

Several shopping centers, like Edison Mall, have installed cellphone charging stations throughout their malls to make sure using the apps to save (amongst other things) doesn’t kill your battery.

The new charging stations allow you to quickly refuel and get back to shopping!

If flashing coupons isn’t your thing, there are several apps on the market that allow you to compare deals by using your smartphone as your personal price scanner. Redlaser, Pricegrabber, and Amazon Price Check are a few of the more popular apps.

Fox 4 in Your Corner’s Julian Glover demonstrated the Redlaser app to shoppers and they were sold.

“If you can check the barcode like you said and go to another place where it's cheaper, why not do that,” asked Carlos Galarza, a shopper.

"It's great because I'm trying to save every dime I can,” said Kim Pauley.

Deal or steal, in-store or online, we’ve all got one thing in common – everyone just looking to save a buck.

“Once they start saving money for the first time, the second time, for the third time,” said White, “They're gonna become believers.”

As Black Friday approaches, be sure to look out for all of the latest steals and deals at the door.

But remember, when it comes to holiday shopping this year, you have a brand new weapon and it’s only a few taps away.
