Port Charlotte neighborhood concerned about unsightly trash
Fox 4 Troubleshooter makes sure mess is cleaned up
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Neighbors in one Port Charlotte community are turning to Four in Your Corner for help with an unsightly mound of trash on their street that they were originally told could take five to ten days to clean up.
Scott Caetano said renters in the house across the street from him were evicted and left all their belongings in the front yard.
He said this has happened multiple times with this home.
"When they get evicted, they just throw the stuff out on the streets and sometimes it just sits there for weeks," Caetano said.
People have been coming by all weekend to pick through the trash, Caetano said.
He isn't just concerned about the way the trash pile looks, but the safety issue it presents.
"If a child walks by that and gets crushed by that stuff, who is going to be responsible for that?" he said.
Fox 4 contacted Charlotte County's Solid Waste Operations Manager, Richard Allen, to see how soon the trash could be removed.
Allen said he would have crews pick up the garbage this afternoon.
When asked about preventing situations like this from happening next time an eviction happens, Allen said he will look into it.
"We can look at possibly changing some of our codes and see if that can be addressed," he said.
The county's Code Enforcement Manager, Shawn Horton, said the trash pile is a violation of county code.
Horton said the county will consider issuing the property owner citations.
In the past three years, Code Enforcement has been called out to this home three times.
Caetano hopes the owner will be held responsible, or that the county will consider changing its eviction process.
"It should have never been out there in the first place, they should've had a dumpster there," Caetano said.
Fox 4 reached out to several different numbers we found for the property owner, but did not hear back.
In the meantime, Fox 4 confirmed the trash pile was removed by Charlotte County Waste Management this afternoon.
