Port Charlotte man arrested in child sex sting
NORTH PORT, Fla. - A 47-year-old Port Charlotte man is facing multiple charges in connection with an Internet child sex sting.
The investigation started with an undercover operation on February 14. An officer working on the Internet came across an individual looking to have sex with children.
The suspect believed he would get to have sex with a 3-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl with special needs. He sent explicit emails indicating the sex acts he wanted to perform on the two. He told the undercover officer he wanted to film the sex acts.
On Wednesday the suspect, Paul Andrew Vangelder, indicated he would be in North Port with his children for a few hours. He wanted to have sex with the children at that point.
At that point, officers began a surveillance on Vangelder to follow him into North Port. Once officers made contact with Vangelder they read him his Miranda rights, questioned him, and got him to agree of a search of an SD card on his digital camera.
On that card they found videos of young boys engaging in sex acts.
Vangelder was arrested and faces 11 charges ranging from attempted sexual battery on a child to traveling to meet a minor for the purpose of sex.
Vangelder is currently in the Sarasota County Jail.
