PGA Champions Tour kicks off in Naples
NAPLES, Fla. - Some of the biggest names in professional golf competed in Naples for the 27th Annual ACE Group Classic.
"We have the best of the best in the field for Champions Tour events," tournament director Gail Graham said.
Seven of the 81 golfers competing are Hall of Famers, including golf legend Tom Watson. He returned to Twineagles for the first time since 2006.
"I always enjoy playing here at this particular golf course, it kind of fits me and it's the time of year where you like to be out of Kansas City, where I'm from, where it's covered in snow and about six degrees," Watson said.
Watson has captured eight major championships throughout his career, including two Masters. He is also the U.S. Captain for this year's Ryder's Cup.
Watson says no matter the tournament, professional golfers always bring the competitive spirit.
"We may not be quite as proficient at it as the kids, but in here we think we are," Watson said.
Bobby Clampett tried to get a competitive edge with his home field advantage. He lives in Bonita Springs.
"We love being at home because we travel so much. So, anytime you can play and sleep in your own bed, it's a blessing," Clampett said.
And Clampett isn't the only one who enjoys golf in Naples. This year's tournament has attracted a record number of spectators.
"It's a wonderful place to come, easy to walk, the weather is spectacular so that makes for a good experience," Graham said.
It's also a hole-in-one for the local economy and local charities like First Tee of Naples/Collier and NCH.
