Severe thunderstorm watch issued

UPDATE:  A Tornado Warning is in effect for Northwestern DeSoto county until 6pm tonight.

National Weather Service meteorologists detected a tornado near Myakka City, 20 miles north of North Port.  

It is moving toward the east at 35 miles per hour.  It is estimated to be 8 miles south of Ona by 6pm.

CAPE CORAL - A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Glades and Hendry counties until 11pm tonight.  

A strong line of thunderstorms is moving in from the Gulf of Mexico.  

This line of storms contains frequent lightning, gusty winds and torrential rains.  It is expected to reach Charlotte County by 6pm and continue to move through the area until almost midnight.  

We could see between a quarter to an inch of rain in some locations.  

There is a small possibility for water spouts and isolated tornadoes.  Winds may gust in excess of 50 miles per hour near and around thunderstorms.
