MANATEE CO., Fla. - A 19-year-old Naples woman was killed Monday in a crash in Manatee County where a highway incident led to the closing of I-75 snarling traffic and contributing to the deadly crash.

19-year-old Nicholas Calton was driving south on I-75 approaching the University Parkway exit.  He came upon two vehicles stopped on the Interstate due to other traffic stopped due to an earlier incident on the University Parkway overpass which led to the closing of the highway.

Calton tried to brake but ended up hitting two other vehicles stopped on the interstate before rolling his car which came to rest in the center median.  The resulting crash killed Mikayla Brandt and seriously injured Calton and another passenger, 19-year-old Skyler Rhoden also of Naples.

Four other people in the two other vehicles suffered minor injuries.

The interstate was closed because the driver of a big rig had been involved in an earlier incident on the University Parkway overpass in which he dropped his load on the highway, smashing the roadway bed, sending it onto the highway below.

The FHP says the driver of the big rig is under investigation.  Calton will be cited for careless driving.
