Gay student beaten at East Lee County High School
LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - An East Lee County High School student is facing a battery charge for beating an openly gay classmate.
The incident happened during lunch Thursday in the school's cafeteria. The school resource officer says the 18-year-old Jonathan Colon, who says he is openly gay, told her he was punched for being gay.
The SRO says 18-year-old James Griffin first threw a piece of bread at Colon hitting him in the back of the head. When Colon tossed the bread into the air, Griffin then threw milk in his face and then started hitting him.
Another student tried to intercede to protect the victim. Griffin is charged with battery.
