Fort Myers neighborhood evacuated after suspicious package scare
FORT MYERS, Fla. - A bomb scare shuts down a road for hours while forcing neighbors out of their homes in South Fort Myers.
The Regional Bomb Squad is investigating a suspicious package after deputies followed a tip to a home on Idlewild Street Sunday afternoon.
Authorities worked for hours with the help of a robot to remove the materials safely from the home. Investigators say the homeowner was eventually taken into custody.
Idlewild was closed during the ordeal and residents were evacuated.
"I heard some sirens," said neighbor Scott Younger. "I was taking a nap and then I saw they had closed down the street. I thought it was some kind of medical emergency."
The sheriff's office has not yet released what was found inside the package. Residents are now back in their homes.
