Fort Myers/Hendry County opens emergency cold weather shelters

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Cold weather emergency shelters will open once again Thursday night in Southwest Florida.

The Salvation Army in Fort Myers will opens it doors to men, women and children who do not have safe shelter. Shelters open at 7:00 p.m., 2476 Edison Avenue for men and 2400 Edison Ave for women and children.

The evening begins with a hot meal served from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Sally's Café (2476 Edison Ave.), If available socks for cold feet and hats to keep in body heat will be distributed.

The Salvation Army is seeking donations of a few hundred pairs of new socks new, warm hats and jackets.

Overnight guests will also be fed the following morning.

Hendry County will open two cold weather emergency shelters Thursday night. 

At 6:00 p.m. the Clewiston Youth Center, located at 110 Osceola Avenue will open in Clewiston; and the United Way House, located at 133 N. Bridge Street in LaBelle. 

The shelters will be open until 7:00 a.m. Thursday.  If there are none seeking shelter by 9:00 p.m., the facilities will close and the volunteers will be allowed to go home.  The shelters are being staffed by American Red Cross and local volunteers.
The shelters are open to anyone who needs a warm place to stay, including those without adequate heat in their homes.  Please urge anyone considering seeking shelter to be in place prior to 9:00 p.m.
