Families honor victims of violent crimes
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Friends and family of victims of violent crimes met for a memorial tribute at Lakes Park Saturday.
Members of the 20th Judicial Circuit Court's victims advocates hosted the Kate Bryson Memorial Tribute, named for an influential advocate.
Taunya Cola and her family attended the ceremony in honor of her nephew Markeish Corbett.
"No one ever expects to get that phone call or that visit from any police," Cola said.
Corbett was gunned down while sitting inside his car in November 2012.
Cola says events like these give her family a chance to grieve with others who are going through the same struggle.
"You're not going to forget, but it will help ease the pain a little easier and make it easier to go on and be proud to be able to do that," Cola said.
Kerrie Wilson is also grieving. She lost her friend Mary to domestic violence last year.
"She's my best friend, she will always be my best friend. So this helps me put it in a place where I can grieve and share," Wilson said.
