FHP identifies driver in fatal San Carlos Park crash
SAN CARLOS PARK, Fla. - The Florida Highway Patrol identified the driver of a car that fled from a traffic stop that ended in a fatal crash on U.S. 41 in San Carlos Park Wednesday.
27-year-old Shannon Omar Mitchell was driving a white Chevy that crashed head-on into a pickup truck killing his passenger 40-year-old Kyla Dion Nesmith of Fort Myers.
The FHP says a trooper had stopped Mitchell for a window tint violation on southbound U.S. 41 near Sanibel Boulevard. As the trooper was preparing to ticket Mitchell, he sped off.
Mitchell's car clipped a curb in the median and flipped over slamming head-on into a truck driven by Paul Jenkins of Cape Coral. Jenkins suffered minor injuries.
The crash closed southbound U.S. 41 for hours.
Mitchell is in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital. Charges against Mitchell are pending.
