TALLAHASEE - Former Florida Governor Charlie Crist is opening up about his big party switch.

Crist was governor from 2007 to 2011 as a Republican.

In 2010, he ran for an open U.S. Senate seat as an independent, losing to Republican Senator Marco Rubio.

Then in December 2012, he announced he had become a registered democrat.

Crist described why he changed teams.

"I think I'll quote Jeb Bush. He said it better than I ever could,” Crist said. “Today's Republican party, at least the leadership, is perceived as being anti-women, anti-minority, anti-education, anti-gay couples, anti-environment. Pretty soon there's nobody left in the room."

Crist is now battling incumbent Republican Governor Rick Scott for his old job in what is already shaping up as a bitter campaign.
