CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Investigators say a child playing with a lighter is to blame for an apartment fire in Cape Coral Wednesday night.

A Cape Coral fire inspector says a 3-year-old girl under the care of her grandfather was playing with his lighter and starter her bed on fire.

The child alerted her grandfather who tried to put out the fire before calling 911.

The fire damage was limited to child’s bedroom, with very minor smoke damage extending through adjacent rooms of the apartment. Damage was estimated at $10,000 and firefighters are relieved that the little girl was able to get out of the room based on the amount of heat and smoke generated by the fire.

Cape Coral Fire personnel will be working with the family as part of its newly reinstated Juvenile Firesetter Program. This program helps families identify risks and teach fire safety values to youth who have demonstrated a curiosity about fire resulting in property damage.
