Cape man arrested for pointing laser at airliner
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Cape Coral police arrested a 51-year-old man Saturday night for pointing a laser at aircraft.
Police say a commercial aircraft inbound to Southwest Florida International Airport reported a laser was shined at their aircraft.
While responding to the complaint a Lee County helicopter spotted three individuals in the 3000 block of SW 26th Ct. That's when their chopper was hit with the laser.
The pilot was able to guide police to the location where they questioned the individuals.
Stephen Clyde Plock was arrested for a 3rd degree felony, misuse of laser lighting devices.
Police say Plock confessed to the crime.
"Given the attention that cases such as this received in the years following 9-11, it is stunning that anyone would do this. Laser illumination devices that are available to the public are more powerful and affordable than ever before, and the potential to blind or disorient a pilot mid-flight is very real and very dangerous."- Det. Sergeant Dana Coston, Cape Coral Police Department Public Affairs Officer
