Cape Coral Police target uninsured drivers
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Cape Coral Police teamed up with the National Insurance Crime Bureau and insurance agencies to crack down on uninsured drivers.
Officers were out in full force Tuesday pulling over drivers violating traffic laws and making sure they had valid insurance.
"No one wants to get hit by an uninsured motorist and fraudulent insurance cards are one of the reasons insurance rates go up," Senior Special Agent Ralph Garcia with the NICB said.
The NICB started running these operations in 2009. Florida is the first and only state running the targeted operations.
After an officer pulls over a car and gets the driver's information, he relays the information back to dispatch. Dispatch is set up in a command center with insurance agents from multiple different agencies and are able to verify a driver's insurance within seconds.
Garcia says the operation is more about public awareness than netting a big number of arrests.
"We want to make the public aware that law enforcement and the insurance industry is working together to make sure people have insurance and valid insurance," Garcia said.
