Walk For The Poor
Registration for the fifth annual St. Vincent de Paul Walk For The Poor, a vital fundraiser to help the needy in Charlotte County, is underway. The Walk will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 211 W. Charlotte Ave., in Punta Gorda. Registration is at 9 a.m. The route will take walkers, via sidewalk, around the church property, a distance of one-quarter mile. The Walk is organized by the SVDP District Council of Charlotte County Florida Inc. To register as a walker and/or to make a donation by check or credit card, visit the Council’s web site at www.svdpcharlottefl.org. Businesses and other organizations that would like to help sponsor the Walk also are encouraged to sign up through the web site. Volunteers to help run the WALK are needed as well, and can sign up through the web site. Walkers who give $25 or more will get a free t-shirt. For more information, call (941) 448-5950. The event raises funds to help the four St. Vincent conferences in the county continue to provide food, clothing, home furnishings, household goods and financial assistance to qualified families and individuals. In the past year, those conferences and their combined volunteer workforce of more than 400 helped more than 108,000 men, women and children in the county. Those helped received assistance valued at more than $1.6 million. In addition, St. Vincent volunteers visited hundreds in prison, hospitals, nursing homes and a veteran's facility. These are hard times for so many. St. Vincent de Paul offers hope. The four centers provide those in need with food, clothing, household goods and limited financial assistance to keep the electricity or water on or to stave off eviction. It doesn’t stop there. “Our ultimate goal is to identify people who are sincerely interested in breaking the cycle of poverty and maintaining a better life for themselves and their families,” said Richard Peters, president of the District Council. “A hand up, not a handout! St. Vincent volunteers serve as mentors to guide them. “We hope those more fortunate will register to walk and raise desperately needed funds. We need all the help we can get.” The District Council represents St. Vincent conferences at Sacred Heart, St. Charles Borromeo, St. Maximilian Kolbe and San Antonio Catholic churches. SVDP is an international Catholic lay organization founded in 1833 to serve the needy, regardless of religious affiliation.
