New Year, New Obedient Pooch
Have you wished your dog would listen, walk better on the leash, and even learn a trick or two? If your New Year’s resolution is to get your pooch better behaved, then we invite you to take an obedience course with him! Suncoast Humane Society is hosting a six week canine obedience course at the South Venice Civic Association building. The class will be on Thursday evenings starting January 9 and ending February 13, 2014. Registration is required, along with proof of rabies and other required shots. Sign up at Suncoast Humane Society, located at 6781 San Casa Drive, Englewood, or call 941-474-7884 and visit www.humane.org for more information. Two obedience levels are available depending on your dog's needs. Level one is available for dogs five months and older to teach focus, sit, down, come, stay, wait, and walking on leash as well as polite manners in the home and in public. Level two includes an AKC Canine Good Citizen Test. Upon completion of the course, handlers and dogs will be evaluated on the skills learned to earn the opportunity to order an AKC Canine Good Citizen certificate. Knowledge of basic obedience is required for this course. The price for the six week course is $100, with a 20% discount for dogs who have been adopted from Suncoast Humane Society. Please remember to bring treats and wear sneakers. The South Venice Civic Association building is located at 720 Alligator Drive, South Venice, FL 34293. For more information, contact Suncoast Humane Society at 941-474-7884, visit www.humane.org, or stop by their adoption center at 6781 San Casa Drive, Englewood. Suncoast Humane Society has been serving animals and people since 1971. Founded as Englewood Animal Aid Society, the organization’s services and programs were soon challenged to meet the demands placed on them by the pet over-population crises. Expansions to their facility in Englewood during the 1980s and 1990s helped the Society to more effectively provide for a growing service area. To reflect the changes, the organization became Suncoast Humane Society. Today their service area includes Charlotte County, most of Sarasota County, and the Boca Grande portion of Lee County, a total of over 450 square miles.
