Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast Bowl for Kids’ Sake
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is joining forces with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast in Lee County to Bowl for Kids’ Sake. The event will be held at Gator Lanes, Saturday, Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with teams playing in two hour increments. It all started with a call from Deputy Mike Elkady to Big Brothers Big Sisters earlier this year, “I want to help the kids in Big Brothers Big Sisters.” In a matter of months, he has recruited more than 200 of his colleagues to bowl, with all of the money raised helping support one-to-one mentoring in Lee County. “I’ve never planned an event like this before,” Elkady said. “All I knew was that I wanted to do something to help. Bowling is a great fit for the deputies.” Elkady has recruited 40 team captains from the Sheriff’s Office who are forming teams of six players each. Mentors and their “littles” in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program will also be forming teams and bowling. “We’ve had the Bowl for Kids’ Sake concept in other counties,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters Lee County Community Resource Director Angela Melvin. “But this is the first time we’ve had a local Sheriff’s Office volunteer to coordinate the event. Call it competition or not, but now other law enforcement agencies, most recently Manatee County, are wanting to follow suit. It’s going to be a heck of a lot of fun.” Registration is $25 per team member, which includes two hours of bowling, shoes, pizza and drinks with the proceeds benefiting the youth of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Lee County. Sponsorships are also available starting at $250. The event is open to the public. “It is going to be a great opportunity for local law enforcement to interact with children in a fun way,” Melvin said. “We are very thankful to the Sheriff’s Office for giving us so much support.” Gator Lanes is located at 7050 Crystal Drive in Fort Myers. Lanes are still available for the public to participate. For additional information, email email@example.com or call 239-288-4224.
