PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Laura Oliver, Brightview Senior Living (312) 505-0210 LOCAL WOMAN CREATES CHARITY TO BENEFIT HOMELESS FORT MYERS AREA HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS Talking Shoes Charity Sponsors Annual Fundraiser FORT MYERS, FL (June 7, 2013) –Anita Lacy, Community Sales Director at Barkley Place Senior Living, is leveraging her connections with area seniors to help high school seniors get their senior year off on the right foot. Last year, Lacy created the Talking Shoes Charity in memory of her oldest son Michael who once referred to his shoes as “talking shoes” when he would walk to school with the front of his shoes flapping up and down. Having firsthand experience with homelessness and poverty, Lacy knows shoes are often the last thing parents can afford. Since 2007, Florida has led the nation with the largest increase in homelessness at 14.8%. Florida is also one of five states in the nation that accounted for nearly half of the nation’s homelessness in 2012. The percent of persons living below the poverty level in Fort Myers is 25.2%; almost double that of the entire state of Florida at 14.7%. The Talking Shoes Cookout & Fundraiser will be held Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Barkley Place 11 am -12:30 pm at 36 Barkley Circle. The event is open to the public. Attendees will be treated to a fabulous summer cookout and live music in exchange for their monetary donation or donation of a new pair of sneakers. Lacy says: “I’m now able to buy new shoes but unfortunately Michael is no longer here; that is why I started "Talking Shoes". This charity is set up for the thousands of high school students just like Michael who have fallen on bad economic times. Hopefully a new pair of shoes will help the students complete their last year of high school and get them off to a great start into their future.” The recipients clearly appreciate Lacy’s efforts. An administrator at one of the high schools on the receiving end of the donations had this to say about Lacy: “We are simply overwhelmed! This is such a gracious act of kindness for our students. We so much appreciate your devotion to this program, which you have created on behalf of your son’s memory. What a blessing!” # # # If you’d like more information about this event please call Laura Oliver at (312) 505-0210 or email her at
