Ancient Traditions Modern Expressions Is Ikebana Annual Exhibit Ikebana International Naples Chapter # 160 invites you to their beautiful annual Japanese Floral Arts exhibit called “Ancient Traditions and Modern Expressions” on Friday, March 8th from 10 a.m to 5 p.m and Saturday, March 9th from 10 a.m to 4 p.m at the Moorings Presbyterian Church in Naples located one block west of 41 just north of Clive & Daniels at 791 Harbour Drive. The entrance fee is eight ($8.00) dollars and children under 12 are admitted free. The organization recently celebrated its’ 41st year in Naples and is part of an international network of Ikebana groups. The exhibit theme expresses the spirit of Ikebana or the way of the flower through the centuries to modern design in the flower display. There will be ongoing flower arranging demonstrations from 10:30 to 3:15 on both days by senior teachers of the three schools represented in the organization, Sogetsu, Ohara and Ikenobo. Our members and teachers come from all parts of the world including Japan, Iran, the Philippines and of course, Canada to mention a few and they bring a varied, rich cultural heritage to their artistry. Ikenobo is the oldest and most traditional of the schools, a tradition born in Japan over 550 years ago and once restricted to male aristocracy. The Ohara School evolved in the late nineteenth century, when people began growing western plants, Ohara popularized a style, moribana that was used for the new western flowers in Ikebana arrangements. In 1927, when everybody believed practicing Ikebana meant following established forms, Sofu Teshigahara recognized Ikebana as a creative art and founded the Sogetsu School. Their mantra is that anyone can enjoy Sogetsu Ikebana anytime, anywhere, using any material. The public will have the rare chance to shop at the Ginza or Japanese market for a variety of containers and necessities for flower arrangements. Attendees will be able to learn about the different schools and sign up for lessons. This is a once a year opportunity to see a large display of Japanese flower arrangements and learn how they are accomplished. For further information please go to www.IkebanaNaples.com.
