“Food for Life"
The Harry Chapin Mobile Food Pantry will be in Punta Gorda Monday, May 21, offering “Food for Life,” a new program providing the poor with healthy foods and information for those with a high risk of Type 2 diabetes. The mobile pantry, assisted by volunteers from St. Vincent de Paul, Sacred Heart Conference, will be located in the parking lot of First Baptist Church, 450 Gill Street, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Distribution will be limited to the first 300 families. Besides the distribution of fresh produce and other healthy foods, the program will provide child-friendly and adult-based literature explaining healthy eating and meal planning, assistance with signing up for SNAP (formerly known as food stamps), and a cooking demonstration showing families healthy cooking tips. Nurses will be available to check the blood sugar levels of individuals to determine if they are in the diabetic range and to provide wellness materials. Those who test in the “abnormal” range will be referred to medical facilities accessible to low-income individuals and families.
