The Art of Tomymy Simpson
Tommy Simpson is best known for his mixed-media sculptures made from carved, laminated or wheel-turned wood combines with found objects and vivid hand-brushed colors. He creates some of his sculpture for pure aesthetic appreciation, while other works serve a dual purpose as both art and functional objects for the home. His functional sculptures include tables, chairs, lamps, beds, cabinets and ladders. All his work is whimsical yet complex. Each sculpture tells a story. They are assembled like visual poetry with each line in the poem represented in the sculpture by a distinct object or hand-carved wood. Many of Simpson’s sculptures celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of important people in his life. Simpson delightfully rewards those who take time to look and think about what they see.
