FOX 4 Weekend Meteorologist

About Liza

From Tornado Alley to Hurricane Alley over to Fog City and back again, Liza Fernandez is very happy to be back in Southwest Florida forecasting the weather. Originally from New England, she graduated from the only accredited journalism program in Miami, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication from Florida International University.

This is a home coming of sorts for her, having worked for Fox 4 News during the infamous 2004-2005 hurricane season. That's when Hurricane Charley devastated the area. During that tour, she also proactively covered the real estate boom, the environment and development concerns, choosing those beats because of her experience as a licensed real estate sales person and law student at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale. Her work earned her recognition by the Southwest Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Most recently, Liza worked for KRON 4 News in San Francisco – the country's 6th largest media market – for its monster 7-hour morning show. There she filled several important roles: weather anchor, news anchor and reporter. Liza is grateful for having been able to refine her fog forecasting, anchor big breaking news and report on international events like the Olympic Torch Run, not to mention enjoying the food, wine and beauty of the Bay.

Before San Francisco, Liza worked in Fresno, where she was a morning news anchor for the Fox station's 5-hour morning show. Prior to her stay in California, she worked almost exclusively in Florida markets, including Miami and West Palm Beach. And Liza's first on-air job was right here in Southwest Florida working for a competitor back in 2000. That year she broke one of the biggest stories to rock the Lee County School District – the Fire Code Crisis.

She first started forecasting weather in Nebraska. That is also when she began studying meteorology through Mississippi State University and interning at the local National Weather Service office.

Liza also enjoys being behind the scenes. She's helped produce several documentaries. Her favorite project is called "Human Trafficking: A Crime without Borders," on which she served as executive producer. She traveled to the Dominican Republic with a Florida Sheriff's Department as its deputies raised awareness about the problem of human trafficking. She's also produced programs airing on CNBC, Discovery Health and Telemundo and is always looking for her next project.

In the meantime, you can find her at some of Southwest Florida's most popular places, along with some of its out-of-the-way spots, too. Either way, she's always looking for her next big story and working to be in your corner.
