Carpool Popularity

Posted: Updated:

(Lee County, FL)--  What would you do if there was a way to get to work everyday for one month- on just one week's worth of gas? The answer is carpooling. The state has an entire program dedicated to helping you find fellow "carpoolers" and you can pump more into your pocket than your tank.

Kathy Awiszus has been carpooling for the last 3 months with co-workers. She says when she started spending over $400 a month on gas- she knew it was time for a change. Kathy works for Lee County's Department of Transportation. While all county employees are encouraged to carpool as part of the state's Commuter Service's program, Kathy's boss says his employees took it to another level. They organized their very own carpool system.

Fifteen to twenty people who work in Kathy's DOT building now carpool- and that number's growing. Kathy says they all meet in a central location near their homes and take turns driving to the office.

The Commuter Service's web-site is another option for carpoolers. It's a program put on by the state of Florida that helps people find carpool matches. All you have to do is click on the "on-line ride match database" and your well on your way to saving big bucks.
