German WWII survivor dedicates garden to U.S. soldiers

Cape Coral - Antonette Plate, 75, vividly remembers Hitler riding by on a train during WWII and people waving.

But what she remembers most are the U.S. troops.

"The American soldiers were so good to us after the war," said Plate. "And I never ever forget em

Plate was born in German, near Munich, in 1935. She lived through the war and moved to America 50 years ago.

But she never forgot the American soldiers. Now she's using the beauty of nature's colors to say thank you. Plate got permission to plant a garden at the entrance to the Cape Coral Rotary Park.

Replacing cactuses with colorful flowers, she says the garden will be beautiful when it's done in a month. Her husband is working on a sign that will be placed at the garden. And she has already planted two small American flags - all of it dedicated to the soldiers she met more than half a century ago.

"They always gave us things, threw candy from the train and you name it," she said. "They were wonderful."

The garden should be finished in a month. When it's done, Plate plans to take a picture and mail it to the White House.
