Medicaid patient medical histories go electronic

Associated Press - November 14, 2009 11:24 AM ET

MIAMI (AP) - Florida is taking steps to make the medical histories of more than 1 million Medicaid patients available to thousands of doctors, clinics and hospitals around the state.

The director of the state Center for Health Information and Policy Analysis outlined the program at a Miami conference on Medicaid. A formal announcement is expected next week.

According to Health News Florida, the system will gather information from claim forms, including office visits, hospitalizations, diagnoses, prescriptions, immunizations and lab results.

Doctors will be able to access the data through a secured online portal.

About 2.6 million people are enrolled in Medicaid in Florida. About 1 million of those are in HMOs, which a health administration official says will not be included in the program.

The system could be available as early as next year.
