SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - A California man has been convicted of a 31-year-old murder in Sarasota.
A jury convicted 60-year-old Kenneth P. Auringer of second-degree murder Friday.
John Allaman Jr., a business owner known for helping drifters, hitchhikers and others, was found stabbed to death in 1978. With modern forensics, police submitted fingerprints to a database in 2007 and linked Auringer to the crime scene and Allaman's stolen car. DNA from saliva on cigarettes found at the murder scene also matched Auringer, who was arrested in March at California mobile home park.
Auringer could face life in prison.
