MIAMI (AP) - Miami-Dade County's top law enforcement officer is stepping down.
Miami-Dade Police Director Robert Parker turned in retirement papers Friday, saying he has enjoyed working to reduce crime and serving the public.
His retirement is effective Sunday, a day before pay cuts for most nonunion employees would take effect. County Mayor Carlos Alvarez announced the cuts Friday.
Parker said that if he had stayed with the department past Sunday, he would have lost money and other benefits.
Alvarez has named Assistant Director James Loftus as interim director of the department.
